The Cedar Lakes North of Sargent Texas A few people have asked me to post some information about the Cedar Lakes. The Cedar Lakes are a really wild part of the Texas Coast. Winter Fishing in Sargent Enjoy fishing while running out the Winter Boat Blues. Winter fishing around Sargent is really fun. It's time to fish for Sheepshead.  Sheepshead are really abundant and prolific around East Matagorda Bay and Sargent Texas. If you live on the Creek, Canal or on the intracoastal  you can catch them off of your docks. For the next 8 weeks the fish we call Sheepshead are prolific around Sargent. Their spawn usually is in the end of March. They love docks, structure, Oyster Reefs, rocks or any structure.. They love canals and piers and any rocks or Oyster Beds. They are close...

The East Matagorda Bay Oyster is making a comeback.  But unfortunately  this season's opening  has been delayed The commercial Oyster Beds are located about 10 miles south of Sargent and fan out from  Live Oak Bay and Dressing point. This is that time of the year when one of my favorite foods is ready to harvest around Sargent Texas.  These incredible morsels are some of the best tasting Oyster in the United States. This year the state of Texas Health Department  has delayed the opening of the Sargent Oyster season because of massive rains before the November 2015 opening day. but look for the opening...

In the Fall the North East Winds can disorient bait fish and shrimp  when they pass though near Sargent. Cool Fronts bring this kind of wind. This is a good thing. Bait can "stack up" in different parts of the bay. This attracts big fish. Look for birds check out south shore line and work the drift map This weekend look for drifts off South Shore. The Surf off Mitchell cut still producing fish and bait.  So all around Sargent tides Winds and plenty of fish. Look for some flounder starting to run with this new cool front. Remember  to count to 10 before setting your hook when you have flounder....

Watch Tides this week.  I would  fish the surf around the Sargent Cliffs on the Beach. Trout also are good on live shrimp over shell in East Matagorda bay all week.  The Redfish run is starting to heat up around Mitchells cut too.  Reds are really starting to run. Croaker are hot now too. If you never caught a two or three pound croaker this could be your time of the year to do it. The Croaker run is going at full speed and they are huge.  The kids really love catching them. I do too. Sargent Maps and History Way back in 1963 the Army Corp of Engineers decided to cut a channel into the Gulf of Mexico at Sargent. This cut became known as McCabes Cut.  As you can see from this 1944 photograph from the Texas Land office there was already an oxbow lake that is just like Old Dead Caney Creek. McCabes cut was originaly 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep and over the years grew like a monster. The Cut in 1988 was 300 feet wide and 30 feet deep. Sargent News Fishing Report East Matagorda Bay Fall 2014 Sarent news and fall fishing report for Novemeber 2014. The Tides and The rains came to Sargent these last two weeks and it is great to have this inflow of fresh water.  That combined with October Tides and you are setting up for big fall action. Redfish will invade backwater lakes in October and November months looking for food. They love these high tides and really get turned on this time of the year. This time of year use either dead shrimp with head on on leader with a slip sinker.  Also, a live mullet on the end of a blood red leader really gets them bonkers and wanting plenty of action. Swing Bridge Sargent Texas is the last of it's kind in the State of Texas. It was slammed by Barge Yesterday. Sting Ray Marina is still open so go have a nice lunch and watch them repair bridge. Ferry service is available to the Island on a limited basis. Video!
